New Musical Director for BOMVC
Ilana Jacobs and BOMVC Chairman, Richard Hackett, sign the contracts We are delighted to announce that we have appointed a new Musical Director. Ilana Jacobs joins us from 22 May 2025. Our sincere thanks go to Paul Stanton, a chorister, who has been Acting MD since January. He will be staying on as Assistant MD working with Ilana.
Ilana is a local singing teacher and Musical Director with a passion for nurturing individual voices and group harmonious sound. A Royal Northern College of Music graduate, where she trained as an opera singer, Ilana brings decades of performance and teaching experience across diverse musical styles.
Ilana is thrilled to be taking on her new role with the Brixham Orpheus Male Voice Choir, where she looks forward to working with the talented members to create inspiring performances that resonate with a variety of local audiences.
The choir has been searching for a new Musical Director for 18 months after Ron Burrington announced that he was stepping down in December 2023 after 19 years in the post. He in fact stayed on for another year before finally hanging up his baton in January 2025. Many avenues were explored but none successfully until our accompanist Anne Fairey mentioned that she knew of someone who might be interested. That led us to Ilana who proved to be an instant hit with the choir.

BOMVC triumphs at Torbay Music Festival!
On 28 February BOMVC took part in the Torbay Music Festival at the Palace Theatre in Paignton. Along with other choirs and Barbershop singers we sang in front of an adjudicator who gave a very enthusiastic account of our performance of two songs, Hallelujah and Rachie. He said that we displayed ‘a confident and secure tone throughout’ and that we ‘gave a nice rousing performance’. Well done to all the lads who sang, to Paul for leading us and to Anne for accompanying us. Thanks to Anne for encouraging us to enter. We were placed in the Commended Band and walked away with the trophy for the CH5 Class.
