On 10 October Brixham Orpheus Male Voice Choir held a free, open singing workshop as an outreach activity for the local community in its rehearsal space at The Christian Community Centre in Brixham.

The workshop was also intended as part of a recruitment drive to bolster chorister numbers which had reduced significantly since the Covid epidemic. There had been slight increases over the five years since the epidemic but these were counteracted by members leaving, mostly through old age or in some cases dying. The core number remained between 18 and 24.

In its 72 year history the Choir has always been central to Civic activity of the thriving Devon fishing town. As part of a £2000 grant, generously provided by Brixham Town Council to help sustain the choir, £500 was allocated to this workshop. Many existing Choir members came along to support the event and were joined by eleven new participants, who came from across Torbay and beyond. Musical Director Ilana Jacobs started with a comprehensive warmup session and taught the group three new songs. Following this workshop the Choir numbers have expanded by 36%.
