Paul Stanton – Assistant Musical Director

Paul was born in Rugby, Warwickshire and started singing in his local church choir, initially as a treble before dropping to tenor as his voice broke. He attended three Royal School of Church Music summer schools in his teens, which culminated in singing in Edinburgh Cathedral.
After University in Swansea where Paul sang with the Choral Society for a year he then joined the Royal Navy. After 23 years’ service with no organised singing, Paul retired to become an accountant – a role he still performs. Retiring, and with children now fledged, time was available to start singing again. Paul joined the Fareham Philharmonic Society in 2016 singing as a first bass.
He joined the Hampshire Police Male Voice Choir in 2018, initially as a baritone, which deepened his interest in this style of singing. Paul took lessons with the Choir’s Musical Director who was a qualified singing tutor in order to attempt to improve his singing. What this did was to expand his range and no longer fearing the top G’s he moved up to second tenor!
Covid impacted all of us, and Paul and Jill took an opportunity to move to Devon from Hampshire. Paul joined the Brixham Orpheus in November 2021. He also sings with the mixed Big Noise Chorus in Torquay. He became Assistant Musical Director in August 2024 and Acting Musical Director from January 2025.
